About conservation at the Gallery
Our conservation team works to prevent, restore and repair damage and deterioration to artworks in our care.
Conservators are specialists who carry out tasks such as conserving works on paper, paintings, photographs and objects. They treat works and contribute to research to ensure the long-term preservation of the Gallery’s artworks.
Ongoing conservation research is important for informing how we, and other professionals, preserve and treat artworks. Our conservation team’s research into materials and techniques also helps us learn more about the items and history of the Gallery’s collection.
In 2014, we established the Gallery’s Conservation Research Centre to show our commitment to ongoing focus on research. As members of the New Zealand Conservators of Cultural Materials (NZCCM) our conservators abide by the NZCCM code of ethics.
