Biography
John Richard Morris was one of five brothers, four of whom became photographers and was in business from 1870/2. Elected president of the association of professional photographers, Morris had a chain of studios with managers (including J G Wills, F L Jones, and C E Merrie). Morris himself had rooms in the Arcade, later known as Broadway. He was an exhibitor at the 1884 International Exhibition (Christchurch Star, 7 January 1884), and was awarded the Second Order of Merit at the Centennial International Exhibition in Melbourne in 1888 (NZ Gazette 1889, no.20, p347). He died on 29 June 1919 (aged 65) during the influenza epidemic and is buried at Andersons Bay Cemetery. Probate records held at Archives NZ (Dunedin) (1919, no.6426). Resident in Queen Street, Dunedin in 1893.
