Biography
Anthony van Dyck enjoyed great success as a history painter and portrait artist in Flanders, Italy and England before his untimely death at the age of 42.
The most talented student of Peter Paul Rubens, like his master Van Dyck travelled to Italy. His time at the court of Charles I of England gave rise to a type of portrait that typified the elegance and refinement of that court and the great aristocrats of the period.
Commercially savvy and aware of the role of prints in spreading his influence and fame, Van Dyck engaged professional printmakers to create reproductive prints of his compositions.
